The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
