The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
