The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
